Question for my readers (or anyone really)
I'm racking my brain on this one but, if Emmett were to have a favorite musical, what would it be? And it would have to be one with lots of costumes, a real extravaganza!

I don't really know that much about musicals - the only ones I like are Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Oliver.

Those won't work. Thanks in advance.

Well, at the King of Babylon contest, the fantasy music was from West Side Story....I think that he would enjoy the hunky men.

I forgot that was the music from there! I don't know if it'll work though for what I have planned in my twisted (and crowded for that matter) mind.

I will keep that one in mind though! Thanks.

I hate musicals. I couldn't even name one for you, sorry. But thanks for the other reply to which I can not reply. Funnily enough, I actually recced a Brian/Daphne story in retread ages ago. It was very, very good. And yes, sometimes the description don't do the fics justice. Now about that cannibal fic....lol.

Yeah - I'm not a musical type person either. I just thought of Tommy when Vamp brought up Jack but that is sooo not Emmett.

Personally I have always thought that gayest musical of all is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: nothing can beat dancing cowboys!

And if you saw the movie you will remember it can be quite fanciful in the costume department (both men and women).

Do you remember that he quotes "Hello Dolly" in 116. I bet he'd love "Hello Dolly". The movie starred Barbra Streisand and the original play starred Carol Channing. Lots of songs, dances and costumes galore!

Yeah, I was thinking of Hello Dolly. It's a close call between Hello Dolly and Funny Girl because I'm definitely going with Barbara.

I have to think in terms of costumes.

Thanks!

Cabaret, Chicago, Victor/Victoria, Rocky Horror? Probably all too 'dark' for E but my two cents.
Maria: Retro poking eyes outslave_o_spike on June 17th, 2006 06:10 pm (UTC)
Yeah those might be too dark for Em. I loved Victor/Victoria! I actually never thought of that one as a musical but I guess it was.

Rocky Horror is a classic unfortuneately not for Em. (Otherwise that would have been a fun one to do).

Thanks!

You've come to the right spot. I'm such a musicals queen (despite being a straight woman, LOL) that on that quiz "You're a queen if..." the one that got me was "you still haven't got over La Cage aux Folles beating Sunday in the Park with George for the Tony in 1978". That's me.

As for Emmett, he looks to me like a Jerry Herman queen. The song they sang at Ted's Church of the Holy Show Tune was from Hello! Dolly, a musical that, on film at least, combined Jerry H with Barbra. I'd put money on that if you want film. If you want stage, the big Herman musicals are Mame!, Hello! Dolly (the exclamation marks are all his), La Cage aux Folles and Mac and Mabel, from which comes the scenery-chewing love song "Time Heals Everything".

I'm thinking West Side Story and the other Sondheim works are not campy enough for Emmett, and the don't feature divas, which would be something he would certainly be after.

Feel free to ask if you want more info on the history of Broadway...
lucinda428lucinda428 on June 17th, 2006 09:22 am (UTC)
P.S. Fosse's too dark, though he does have divas. Emmett is a light person, so - not Sondheim and not Fosse. Definitely Herman and Rodgers & Hammerstein. And he would've loved the film of My Fair Lady, too. All those cossies and flowers and hats, and Audrey.

I'm now down to Hello Dolly or Funny Girl.

Thanks!
netlagdnetlagd on June 18th, 2006 07:28 am (UTC)
I'm a bit late to this game but my money is on Barbra and Hello Dolly!

There are several places throughtout the season where Emmett refers to Barbra films

"Money is like manure..." Hello Dolly

"Put on your Sunday Clothes..." Hello Dolly

"Like Barbra in the Mirror has Two Faces..." The Mirror has Two Faces

Plus you have the following to choose from:
Funny Girl
Funny Lady
Hello Dolly
On a Clear Day
Yentl
A Star is Born (remake)
The Way We Were (not really a musical, but referred to in the West Side Story episode)

OTOH, we have seemed to forgotten the obvious - Judy Garland movies, starting with:
The Wizard of Oz - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (need I say more?)
Maria: Chicken Little dancingslave_o_spike on June 18th, 2006 07:51 am (UTC)
That is so funny you said Wizard of Oz! I was thinking that because of Judy Garland (the more I get comments on this post, the more I realize I do know more musicals than I thought) but then once again, I had to think in terms of Emmett's most favoritist-favoritist (is that a word?) musical because it's something he has to be fanatical about.

Also, it can't be too dark and let's face it, Wizard of Oz was actually a dark movie. The fic itself is already dark so you need something that's in-your-face fluffy and bright. I think I might go with Funny Girl or Hello Dolly because of all the Barbra references in the show and it just fits.

Thanks!
