Usually he finds some real gems, like the one I watched tonight.
It was made in 2004 and it's called Saint Ralph with Campbell Scott and Jennifer Tilly. It's about a 14 year old boy in Canada who's mother is in a coma and he finds out the only thing that can save her is a miracle. Since he attends a Catholic school, he starts asking about whether or not miracles are real and I could go on and on but I don't want to give the story away.
It's a story about hope and just making a jump because sometimes you gotta. I loved it and yes, I was crying at the end of the movie.
Only a few movies do that to me - like Silent Running from 1977 with Bruce Dern. I still recommend that one. No matter how old the movie gets, how dated it becomes, I still cry when the end credits roll (the little robot and the watering can...*wibble*).
So if you're looking for a movie to rent and you want hope and (yes, there is a religious theme, but it's done intelligently) and something actually not sappy, check it out.
If you want Bruce Dern and a 70's movie (before that other sci fi movie came out) rent Silent Running. It's been cleaned up0 for DVD.
That is all!
